## What Are Hive Workers?

Hive Workers are entities — initially issued to organizations and eventually available to individuals — that perform critical roles within the logic-governed infrastructure of Fractal. They operate as decentralized, efficient computational agents licensed through Cryptocase and are scaled dynamically based on system demand.

Each Hive Worker is part of a **Neural Compute Unit (NCU)**, nicknamed a “**Hive**,” which organizes compute resources in biologically inspired formations.

## Neural Compute Units (NCUs)

A Neural Compute Unit (Hive) is composed of either **7 or 19 neurons**, which serve as the fundamental compute elements. A **neuron** is not a Hive Worker itself — rather, Hive Workers power and maintain these neurons.

At minimum, the operational requirements are:

– **One Hive with 7 neurons**
– Plus one or more devices fulfilling roles such as **orchestrator**, **notifier**, **observer**, **agent(s)**, and **query point**

> Vertisan originally launched with **5,888 Hive Workers**, which support and maintain a distributed mesh of neurons within Hives across the ecosystem.

The architecture is inspired by natural systems — particularly bee hives — with Hives structured in **hexagonal ring formations** to optimize resonance and coordination.

– Small enough to run from a shelf or cabinet, active 24/7
